Every breath you take, every grain of rice on your plate, and many of the medicines in your cabinet trace back to one thing: the staggering variety of life on Earth. This variety is called biodiversity, and it forms the living foundation that keeps ecosystems stable, economies running, and human health intact. Yet most of us rarely stop to think about how deeply our wellbeing depends on the millions of species that share the planet with us. Understanding what biodiversity is, why it matters, and what threatens it is one of the most important steps toward protecting the natural systems we cannot live without.

What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety of all living things on Earth, from microscopic bacteria to towering trees and large mammals. The Convention on Biological Diversity describes it as the variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other ecosystems. The term was popularised in the 1980s and has since become central to how scientists, governments, and conservationists talk about the health of the natural world.
Biodiversity is not a single idea. Scientists usually study it at three connected levels: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. These levels are nested inside one another. Genes exist within species, species exist within ecosystems, and ecosystems form the larger living fabric of a region. Losing diversity at any one level weakens the others.
Genetic diversity
Genetic diversity refers to the differences in genes among individuals of the same species. Every plant and animal carries a distinct combination of genes, which is why no two members of a species are exactly alike. Two cows of the same breed may look identical, yet at the DNA level they carry different traits for milk yield, disease resistance, and heat tolerance. This invisible variation is the raw material of evolution and the safety net that allows a species to adapt when conditions change. In farming, genetic diversity is what has let generations of farmers turn wild plants into the productive varieties of rice, wheat, and maize we depend on today.
Species diversity
Species diversity is the variety of different species living in a particular area or across the planet. This is the level most people picture when they think of biodiversity: tigers, elephants, sparrows, butterflies, fungi, and countless others. Globally, species diversity tends to be highest near the equator and decreases toward the poles. Tropical regions therefore hold an enormous share of the planet’s species. A region with many different species is generally more resilient, because the loss of any one species is less likely to collapse the whole system.
Ecosystem diversity
Ecosystem diversity is the variety of habitats and ecological communities in a given region, such as forests, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, coral reefs, and coastal zones. An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and with their physical environment. A country with many ecosystem types supports a wider range of life and a broader set of natural services. The forests, mangroves, wetlands, and reefs in different parts of the country each deliver a distinct bundle of benefits that are very hard to replace once lost.
A mega-diverse country
India holds an exceptional position in the global biodiversity picture. With only about 2.4% of the world’s land area, the country accounts for a striking 7 to 8% of all recorded species, including over 45,000 plant species and around 91,000 animal species. This richness is the reason India is recognised as one of just 17 mega-diverse countries in the world.
This diversity is not spread evenly. India is part of four of the world’s recognised biodiversity hotspots: the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland, which includes the Nicobar Islands. A hotspot is a region with an exceptionally high number of endemic species, meaning species found nowhere else, that has also lost a large share of its original habitat. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site running along the western coast, and the Eastern Himalaya, with its extreme altitudinal range, are among the most species-rich landscapes on the planet.
Why biodiversity matters
Biodiversity is not a luxury or a concern only for wildlife enthusiasts. It quietly underpins agriculture, medicine, climate stability, and the basic functioning of every ecosystem that supports human life. When biodiversity declines, these support systems weaken, often in ways we notice only after the damage is done.
Ecosystem stability and natural services
Healthy, diverse ecosystems provide what are called ecosystem services, the free benefits that nature delivers. Plants convert sunlight into energy and release oxygen, microbes break down organic matter to keep soil fertile, pollinators enable plant reproduction, and forests and oceans absorb carbon. Together these processes give us clean air and water, fertile soil, and crop production through pollination. The more diverse an ecosystem, the more stable and resilient it tends to be, because different species can step in to perform similar functions when conditions shift.
Food and agriculture
Agriculture depends directly on biodiversity. The genetic variety within crops and livestock allows breeders to develop varieties that resist pests, tolerate drought, or yield more food. Pollinators such as bees and other insects are essential for a large share of the crops we eat. Wild relatives of cultivated plants hold genetic traits that can be bred into future crops to keep food systems productive as the climate changes. A narrow genetic base, by contrast, leaves crops dangerously vulnerable to a single pest or disease.
Medicine and human health
A remarkable share of modern medicines originates from natural compounds found in plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. Traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and other indigenous practices, rely heavily on a vast array of medicinal plants. This is why conserving rare, endangered, and threatened medicinal species also means protecting the traditional knowledge associated with them. Each species lost is a potential cure or remedy that disappears before science has even studied it.
Climate resilience
Biodiverse ecosystems are powerful allies against climate change. Forests and wetlands store large amounts of carbon, mangroves buffer coastlines against cyclones and storm surges, and healthy soils retain water and resist erosion. These natural defences reduce the impact of extreme weather and help communities adapt. As climate change accelerates, the ability of species to shift their ranges and ecosystems to absorb shocks depends on the diversity that remains.
The conservation challenge
Despite its value, biodiversity is declining worldwide at an alarming rate. A landmark global assessment by IPBES, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, warned that around one million species are threatened with extinction, many within decades. The decline is described as unprecedented in human history, and species extinction rates are accelerating.
The main drivers of loss
Scientists have identified the leading causes of biodiversity loss, and almost all are linked to human activity. In order of impact, they are changes in land and sea use, direct overexploitation of organisms, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species.
Habitat loss is the single largest driver. As land is cleared for cities, farms, roads, and industry, the natural homes of countless species shrink and fragment. Rapid urbanisation puts intense pressure on the most biodiverse and productive landscapes, leaving habitats patchy and isolated.
Pollution damages biodiversity directly and indirectly. Air, water, and soil pollution harm organisms, degrade habitats, and disrupt the processes that keep ecosystems functioning. Excess nitrogen from fertilisers and the spread of plastics and industrial waste are among the most serious chemical threats to life on land and in water.
Overexploitation through unsustainable hunting, fishing, logging, and harvesting removes species faster than they can recover. Climate change shifts temperature and rainfall patterns, forcing species to migrate or perish, while invasive species introduced by human activity outcompete or prey on native life.
How biodiversity is being protected
Conservation broadly takes two complementary forms. In-situ conservation protects species within their natural habitats, through national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, and biodiversity heritage sites. Ex-situ conservation protects species outside their natural homes, through botanical gardens, zoological parks, seed banks, and gene banks that store genetic material for the future. The Botanical Survey of India, for example, maintains networks of botanic gardens and seed and tissue storage facilities to safeguard the country’s endemic and threatened flora.
At the policy level, the Biological Diversity Act, 2002 provides the legal framework for conserving biological diversity, ensuring its sustainable use, and sharing the benefits from biological resources fairly. The Act promotes both in-situ and ex-situ conservation and empowers local communities through Biodiversity Management Committees and People’s Biodiversity Registers, which document local resources and traditional knowledge. These efforts connect to global commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity, adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit.
The role of sustainable practices
Laws and protected areas alone cannot reverse the decline. Lasting conservation depends on sustainable practices in everyday life and in industry: reducing pollution and waste, using natural resources within their limits, restoring degraded land, protecting pollinators, and involving local communities who live closest to these resources. Because so many people depend on wild species for food, fuel, and income, conservation works best when it also supports livelihoods rather than competing with them. Halting and reversing the degradation of land and oceans can still prevent the loss of a large share of endangered species, but only with sustained and shared effort.
A foundation worth protecting
Biodiversity is the foundation of a healthy ecosystem and, by extension, of human survival. It feeds us, heals us, stabilises the climate, and keeps the natural systems we rely on functioning. The richness found across forests, mountains, wetlands, and coasts is not a backdrop to human life but an active partner in it. Protecting that richness is not only an environmental duty; it is an investment in food security, public health, and a liveable future. The choices made today, in policy, in industry, and in daily habits, will decide how much of this living foundation remains for the generations that follow.
