Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has reshaped how we learn, work, and connect. Smartboards, learning apps, online libraries, and instant search have made knowledge more accessible than ever. But the same tools that empower can also harm when used carelessly. Long screen hours, unfiltered content, and over-reliance on digital shortcuts carry real costs for the body, the mind, and the way we think. Understanding these risks is not about rejecting technology. It is about using it wisely. This post examines the genuine downsides of ICT in learning environments and what thoughtful integration looks like.

Negative health effects of prolonged screen use

The most visible cost of heavy ICT use shows up in the body. Hours spent staring at screens strain the eyes, the neck, and the back. A condition now widely studied is digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome. Its symptoms include dryness, blurred vision, burning, watering, and headaches. Research summarised in a comprehensive review of digital eye strain links these problems directly to reduced blinking, glare, poor lighting, and long unbroken screen sessions.

The scale is significant. Studies of higher education learners have found digital eye strain affecting well over 70% of participants, with prolonged daily screen time and skipped breaks emerging as the strongest predictors. Beyond the eyes, slouching over a laptop or hunching toward a phone leads to neck, shoulder, and lower back pain. These are not minor irritations. Chronic discomfort affects concentration, sleep, and overall well-being, which in turn affects learning.

Why ergonomics matters

An ergonomic setup is the practical defence against these effects. Ergonomics simply means arranging a workspace so the body is supported and strain is minimised. Guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends keeping the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, the wrists in line with the forearms, and the feet flat on the floor. The chair should support the lower back, and the screen should sit an arm’s length away to reduce eye effort.

Habits matter as much as furniture. A widely recommended practice is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the eye muscles and restores a normal blink rate. Adequate lighting, reduced glare, and regular movement breaks complete the picture. None of this is expensive or complicated, yet it is routinely ignored.

The risk of becoming a passive consumer

A subtler danger is mental rather than physical. ICT makes information effortless to obtain, and that ease has a hidden cost. When answers are a tap away, there is little pressure to wrestle with a problem, weigh evidence, or build an argument. The learner shifts from being an active thinker to a passive consumer of information, absorbing content without questioning or creating.

This matters because creativity and critical thinking grow through effort. A learner who only scrolls, watches, and copies misses the productive struggle that deepens understanding. Educational research, including frameworks tied to the OECD’s work on creative thinking, points out that technology influences creativity less through how often it is used and more through how intentionally it is used. Surface-level, recreational engagement tends to dull original thought, while purposeful, strategic use can extend it.

From consuming to creating

The goal is to flip the relationship. Instead of treating the internet as a vending machine for answers, learners benefit when they use ICT to make things: to design, code, build presentations, analyse data, or produce media. Active engagement turns a passive screen session into a creative act. The same device that delivers ready-made content can also become a workshop for new ideas. The difference lies entirely in intent and guidance.

This is also where media literacy becomes essential. Knowing how to evaluate a source, spot bias, and verify a claim transforms a passive reader into a discerning one. Without these skills, easy access simply trains people to accept whatever appears first, which is a poor foundation for independent thought.

Access to inappropriate and harmful content

Unrestricted internet access opens a door that swings both ways. Alongside genuine learning resources sits a vast amount of material that is violent, explicit, misleading, or extremist. Young users often encounter such content accidentally, out of curiosity, or under peer pressure. As Childline India notes, exposure to pornographic, abusive, or radicalising material can leave a lasting impression on impressionable minds.

The risks extend beyond viewing harmful content. They include cyberbullying, online grooming, privacy violations through data harvesting, and addictive design that encourages overuse. A UNICEF guidance note on online safety in education highlights how the rapid rollout of educational technology, often without standardised rules, has widened these exposures, including data security gaps in learning apps. The same document reports that while most schools have child protection policies, far fewer have anti-bullying policies, and only a minority of teachers have received ICT training.

The role of schools in guiding ethical use

This is where education has a defining role. Filters and parental controls help, but technical blocks alone cannot raise a responsible digital citizen. Schools are uniquely placed to teach safe and ethical internet use as a core skill. That means age-appropriate lessons on recognising scams, protecting personal information, reporting harmful content, and behaving respectfully online.

Concrete steps already exist. The Central Board of Secondary Education has, for instance, issued a cyber safety manual for senior school students covering digital citizenship, social media conduct, and how to report inappropriate activity. Embedding such guidance into the curriculum, rather than leaving it to chance, builds judgement that lasts beyond the classroom. The aim is not to fence learners off from the internet permanently, but to equip them to navigate it safely on their own.

Reducing dependence on calculators and digital shortcuts

A final concern is what happens to fundamental skills when machines do the work. The calculator is the classic example. When learners reach for a device to solve simple arithmetic, the mental processes behind calculation, such as estimating, carrying, and sensing number relationships, get little exercise. Over time, those abilities can weaken from disuse.

The evidence here is genuinely mixed, and that nuance matters. Some studies report a measurable decline in mental arithmetic among heavy calculator users, while others find no harm and even benefits for problem-solving and attitudes toward maths. A balanced review in The Conversation concludes that calculators are not inherently damaging; the outcome depends on how and when they are introduced. Used before the basics are secure, they can foster dependency. Used as a tool to handle tedious computation once fundamentals are mastered, they extend what a learner can achieve.

The case for balanced integration

The lesson applies far beyond calculators. Spell-checkers, search engines, and AI assistants all risk the same trade-off: convenience now in exchange for a weaker underlying skill later. The principle that protects against this is balanced integration. Technology should support learning, not replace the thinking that learning depends on.

In practice, this means reserving digital tools for tasks where they genuinely add value, while deliberately preserving room for manual practice. Mental maths drills alongside calculator lessons, handwritten notes alongside typed ones, and original analysis alongside search all keep core abilities sharp. The device becomes an aid rather than a crutch.

Using ICT wisely rather than fearing it

None of these risks argues for abandoning technology. ICT remains one of the most powerful learning tools available, and avoiding it would do far more harm than good. The point is that powerful tools demand responsible use. Physical health requires good posture and regular breaks. Mental growth requires active engagement over passive scrolling. Safety requires guidance and ethical awareness. Core skills require deliberate practice. Each of these is achievable, and together they turn ICT from a hidden hazard into a genuine asset. The dark side of ICT is not the technology itself, but the absence of thought in how we use it.
