Some of the most useful ideas in the world started as a question that sounded a little odd: What if a vacuum cleaner did not need a bag? What if a spacecraft could reach Mars on a fraction of the usual budget? Creative thinking is the mental habit behind questions like these. It is not a gift reserved for artists and inventors. It is a skill anyone can build, and it sits at the centre of almost every problem worth solving. This post breaks down what creative thinking actually means, the techniques you can use to spark it, and the four levels at which creativity shows up in real life.

What creative thinking really means
Creative thinking is the ability to look at a situation from angles most people miss, and to generate fresh, useful ideas as a result. It is often described as the ability to come up with unique, original solutions to problems, which is why it is sometimes called creative problem-solving.
It helps to separate creative thinking from its close cousin, critical thinking. Critical thinking scrutinises assumptions and reasons step by step toward a conclusion. Creative thinking moves differently. It is about generating alternative ideas, practices, and solutions that are unique and effective, often when a problem is messy and the obvious path has failed. You need both. Creative thinking opens up possibilities, and critical thinking helps you judge which ones are worth keeping.
A common myth is that creativity is something you either have or you do not. Research pushes back on this hard. Creative ability is widely treated as a capacity that can be developed with deliberate practice, not a fixed trait handed out at birth. That single idea changes everything about how you approach it. If creativity is a muscle, then techniques are the exercises.
Techniques for creative thinking
You do not have to wait for inspiration to strike. There are structured methods that reliably push your mind out of its usual grooves. Three of the most widely used are brainstorming, lateral thinking, and mind mapping.
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is the most familiar technique, and also the most often done badly. It was developed by advertising executive Alex Osborn as a method to encourage the generation of new and unusual ideas in a group. The core principle is simple: separate the act of generating ideas from the act of judging them.
The reason this matters is that judgement kills ideas early. When you criticise a suggestion the moment it appears, people stop offering bold ones. So a good brainstorming session has clear rules. Aim for quantity first, because a larger pool of ideas raises the odds that a valuable one is hiding inside it. Welcome unusual suggestions, build on what others say, and hold all criticism until later. The wild idea that seems useless often becomes the seed of a practical one once the group refines it.
A simple example: a college committee planning a campus fest with a tiny budget might first list every possible idea without filtering, from sponsorships to student-run food stalls to charging a small entry fee. Only after the list is full does the group start asking which ideas are realistic.
Lateral thinking
Lateral thinking is a term coined by Edward de Bono in his 1967 book on the subject. He described it as an alternative to the conventional vertical logic of most problem-solving approaches, where each step follows directly from the last. Lateral thinking instead makes non-obvious or even random connections, forcing you to change perspective.
De Bono argued that the brain is excellent at recognising patterns, which is efficient but also traps us into seeing problems the same way every time. His memorable line captures it well: you cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper. The purpose of lateral thinking is to break out of rigid thought patterns and generate unpredictable ideas, rather than trying harder in the same direction.
One practical move is to deliberately challenge the assumptions buried in a problem. If a small shop owner asks “How do I get more customers into my store?”, a lateral question would be “What if the store came to the customer instead?” That reframing is how home-delivery models and mobile services are born. The point is not that the first odd idea is always right, but that shifting the angle reveals options that linear thinking hides.
Mind mapping
Mind mapping is a visual technique popularised by Tony Buzan in the 1970s, built on what he called radiant thinking. The method reflects a basic observation about the brain: it does not think in neat, linear lists. It builds complex webs of association that link ideas in multiple directions at once.
A mind map mirrors this. You write the central topic in the middle of a blank page, then draw branches radiating outward for each major idea, with smaller twigs for related sub-ideas. Using colours, keywords, and small images on these branches helps your memory and keeps the ideas flowing. Because the structure has no fixed order, you are free to jump between thoughts and spot connections you would otherwise miss.
Mind mapping is useful far beyond brainstorming. Students use it to organise notes before exams, writers use it to plan essays, and teams use it to map out a project. The act of drawing the map is itself a thinking process, not just a record of one.
The four types of creativity
If creativity ran only from “ordinary person” to “genius,” most of us would feel left out. Psychologists James Kaufman and Ronald Beghetto noticed this gap. In their 2009 paper, they proposed a model that expands the old split between everyday creativity and eminent creativity. They added the idea of mini-c, the creativity inherent in the learning process, and Pro-c, the effortful progression beyond everyday creativity that represents professional-level expertise. The result is the Four-C model, which traces creativity as a developing journey rather than a fixed label. Understood as a path, it runs from mini-c and little-c through Pro-c to Big-C.
Mini-c: creativity in learning
Mini-c is the most personal level. It is defined as a novel and personally meaningful interpretation of experiences, actions, and events. The key word is personal. A mini-c idea is “new to you,” even if the wider world already knows it. When a student finally understands a maths concept by inventing their own way to picture it, or realises a quicker route to college, that is mini-c at work.
What makes mini-c important is that it focuses on the mental act of learning rather than on a finished product anyone else can see. It is the soil in which all other creativity grows. Recognising it matters because it tells us that even small, private insights count as genuine creativity, and that every learner is being creative far more often than they think.
Little-c: everyday creativity
Little-c is everyday creativity that other people can notice and appreciate. The difference between mini-c and little-c is the social element: a little-c idea produces something recognised as both new and useful within a social setting. This is the creativity found in nearly all people in daily life.
Little-c is everywhere once you start looking. Tweaking a family recipe so it tastes better, arranging a small room cleverly to fit more, or finding a smarter way to manage a household budget all count. India’s culture of jugaad, the frugal, improvised fix made from whatever is at hand, is a vivid form of little-c creativity. It is practical, resourceful, and constantly happening around us.
Pro-c: professional expertise
Pro-c describes creativity at a professional level. Here the creator has put in years of development and is recognised as creative by peers in their field, even if they are not yet world-famous. A working architect, a published novelist, a senior software engineer who designs elegant solutions, or a chef running a respected restaurant are all operating at the Pro-c level.
Reaching Pro-c usually takes sustained effort and deliberate practice, often described as roughly a decade of focused development in a domain. This level makes clear that expertise and creativity are not opposites. The deeper your knowledge of a field, the more raw material you have to combine in original ways. Pro-c is where talent meets discipline.
Big-C: groundbreaking creativity
Big-C is the eminent creativity most people picture when they hear the word: the groundbreaking work of celebrated scientists, artists, and leaders. It is the kind of contribution that reshapes a field and is often remembered long after its creator is gone. Think of figures whose work changed how everyone after them thought, from major scientific breakthroughs to enduring works of art.
Big-C is rare by definition, and it is frequently recognised only over time. But it does not appear from nowhere. It almost always grows out of years of Pro-c work, which itself grew from countless little-c and mini-c moments. The four levels are not separate boxes. They are stages along a continuum, and the journey from one to the next is gradual.
Putting the pieces together
The techniques and the four types fit neatly together. Techniques like brainstorming, lateral thinking, and mind mapping are the daily tools that fuel mini-c and little-c creativity. With consistent practice over years, that everyday creativity can mature into Pro-c expertise, and in rare cases into Big-C breakthroughs. The encouraging takeaway is that no one starts at the top. Everyone begins with small, personal insights, and the gap between levels is closed through learning and effort, not luck.
This is also why creativity is worth taking seriously as a life skill. Whether you are solving a problem at work, planning a budget, studying for an exam, or building something new, the same habits apply: question your assumptions, generate many options before judging them, and look for connections others overlook. Treat creativity as a skill you are training, and it grows.
