Ask a ten-year-old what is wrong with the world around them, and the answer often arrives faster and sharper than you might expect. Overflowing dustbins, smoky air, plastic clogging a drain near the bus stop, a favourite tree cut down to widen a road. Children notice these things because they live close to the ground, walk the same streets daily, and have not yet learned to look away. A growing body of community-based research now treats these young observations as serious data. When researchers actually sit down and interview children about the environment, the picture that emerges is detailed, emotionally honest, and surprisingly useful for shaping policy. This is what happens when we stop talking about children and start listening to them.

Why children’s environmental perceptions matter

For a long time, environmental decisions were made entirely by adults, with children treated as people who would simply inherit the consequences. That assumption is changing. Children are among the most vulnerable to environmental harm, partly because of how their bodies work. They breathe faster than adults, so they take in proportionally more polluted air, and early exposure can affect lung growth and brain development. According to the Clean Air Fund, over 90% of children under the age of 15 worldwide breathe air polluted enough to threaten their development, and Delhi has the worst air quality among the world’s capital cities.

Vulnerability also creates a unique vantage point. A child who develops a cough every winter understands air pollution in a way no textbook can teach. India’s exposure here is significant. The UNICEF Children’s Climate Risk Index 2021 ranked India 26th out of 163 nations for the risks climate change poses, with young populations being especially susceptible. Studying what children perceive is therefore not a feel-good exercise. It is a way of gathering ground-level intelligence from those who feel the impact most directly.

Environmental awareness in young minds

When children are asked open-ended questions about their surroundings, a consistent set of concerns appears across very different communities. The big three tend to be pollution, littering, and the loss of trees and green spaces. These are not abstract worries pulled from a syllabus. They are problems children can see, smell, and touch on the way to school.

Pollution they can sense

Air and water pollution dominate children’s responses because they are immediate and physical. In a survey of around 800 schoolchildren in the north Indian city of Kanpur, researchers found that the children had clearly heard of climate change and perceived it as a significant threat. The same body of research connects this concern to lived health experience, with a large share of young respondents linking global warming to breathing and heart-related problems. When pollution shows up as a cough or a stinging throat, awareness becomes personal rather than theoretical.

Littering and waste they can see

Litter is perhaps the most visible environmental problem to a child, because it sits at eye level on streets, in playgrounds, and around water bodies. Studies of young learners repeatedly show that they identify littering as both a local and global problem, and that awareness rises sharply once children are guided to look closely at the waste in their own neighbourhoods. Importantly, children from polluted areas tend to show more concern and more positive attitudes than those from cleaner surroundings, which tells us that perception is shaped strongly by daily environment.

Disappearing trees and animals

The loss of greenery and wildlife is the third recurring theme. Even where children hold a few misconceptions about how climate systems work, deforestation is consistently recognised as a clear environmental problem, and young people frequently say that action is needed urgently. Children form attachments to specific trees, parks, birds, and stray animals, so the removal of a green space registers as a real loss rather than a statistic. This emotional connection is often the seed of lifelong environmental concern.

Key findings from the community

The real value of a community-based study lies in the interviews, where children explain not just what they are worried about but how they experience it. Several patterns emerge again and again when this kind of fieldwork is done carefully.

Concern is high and action-oriented. A common finding is that children are not merely aware but anxious and willing to do something. The Kanpur research recorded high levels of concern alongside a strong willingness to act in favour of the environment. Children rarely respond with apathy when asked directly. They want solutions, and they often ask why adults have not fixed obvious problems.

Children’s voices can scale dramatically. One of the most striking demonstrations of this came in Delhi, where Sesame Workshop India gave children a platform to share concerns with local leaders. Of more than 9,500 children involved, over 9,100 expressed environmental concerns and showed a clear understanding of how human activity harms their communities. For many of these young children, it was the first time their environmental views had been formally documented for decision-makers.

Perception is tied to place. Interviews reveal that children describe environmental problems in terms of specific locations: the drain behind the house, the smoke from a particular factory, the road where it is unsafe to cycle because of traffic and bad air. Research in rural and urban India has highlighted exactly this gap, noting a shortage of studies that capture children’s own perceptions of air pollution and the built environment in their communities. Most earlier work asked parents and caregivers, quietly overlooking the children themselves.

Awareness does not automatically become action. A sobering finding across many studies is that knowing littering is wrong does not stop it. Broader research on littering behaviour shows that even when most people agree littering is wrong, the habit persists because of weak infrastructure, social norms, and a mistaken belief that cleaning systems collect everything anyway. The lesson for working with children is that awareness must be paired with practical support and consistent example, or it fades.

Encouraging environmental responsibility

If children already notice so much, the task for families, schools, and communities is not to lecture but to channel that natural attention into lasting habits. The good news is that children are highly receptive and can form lifelong attitudes towards nature when they are nurtured early.

What families can do

Parents sow the first seeds. Simple, repeated practices carry more weight than any single talk: not wasting water, switching off unused lights, sorting waste at home, refusing single-use plastic, and tending a plant or two. When a child sees these behaviours modelled daily, environmental care becomes ordinary rather than a special occasion. Encouraging children to talk about what they noticed outside that day also keeps their observation skills sharp and their concern alive.

What schools can do

Schools turn private observation into shared knowledge and collective action. India’s policy direction strongly supports this. The National Education Policy 2020 stresses appropriate integration of environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility for conservation, recommending the inclusion of resource conservation and environmental sensitivity across the curriculum, as outlined by the Government of India. The policy also pushes a shift from content-based learning to skill-based, experiential learning, which is far more effective for the environment because children learn by doing rather than memorising.

Concrete school-led initiatives matter most. Eco-clubs are a good example, with the national Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE programme designed to embed eco-conscious practices into everyday school life and help young people grasp the urgency of cutting their environmental footprint. When children actively run such projects – managing waste segregation, planting and caring for trees, monitoring water use – they develop a personal sense of ownership that lectures simply cannot produce.

What communities can do

Awareness at the community level is often the missing link. Communities that are uninformed about the risks of pollution or deforestation tend to continue practices that worsen the problem, and research suggests that a large share of people see public awareness as the single most important factor in tackling environmental degradation. Local clean-up drives, tree plantation events, and neighbourhood waste systems give children real settings to apply what they have learned, while showing them that adults take the problems seriously too. Environmental responsibility is not a one-time lesson. It is a way of life, and it is built through repetition across home, school, and street.

Turning small observations into lasting change

The thread connecting all of this is respect for the child’s own viewpoint. When researchers, teachers, and parents treat a child’s observations as valid evidence rather than cute remarks, two things happen. The child feels heard and grows more confident and engaged, and the adults gain genuinely useful, ground-level information about the state of the local environment. Pollution, littering, and deforestation are not only the concerns children express most often. They are also the problems most within reach of everyday action. A child who plants a tree, refuses a plastic bag, or speaks up about a dirty drain is rehearsing the habits of a responsible adult. The most effective environmental education simply gives that instinct room to grow.
